Ancient Influence on the Making of Jewelry

Gold was the preferred metal in fashioning jewelry in Egypt in 3000 BC. Because gold was easily shaped in different forms the Egyptians created necklaces, bracelets, rings, pendants and other ornamental items. When Tutankhum's tomb was discovered the tomb was filled with all sorts of gold jewelry and ornaments. These artifacts were a true testament to the artistic work put into the creating of jewelry in ancient Egypt.

In ancient Greece around 300 BC they were fashioning jewelry using gems and other materials. The gems such as emeralds, pearls and rubies were used in multi colored jewelry. Other materials like colored glass and stones were also used to create their jewelry items. The Greeks fashioned agate stone to carve cameos and such. Gold was used in the Greek designs as a decorative addition to the many different styles and designed by these artisans.

In 800 BC the jewelry fashioned in Italy was from the Etruscans in Northern Italy. These creative jewelry makers made amulets and charms with hollowed to hold potions, magical sayings and poisons. They made everything from rings to head ornaments, diadems, and wreaths of flowers. They used silver, gold and a moonlit gold call electrum to make rings with the popular amber stone. The Etruscans were an influence on Roman jewelry making.

The Romans used rings as a means of recognizing ones rank and social class. Silver, gold, and iron were the materials used in making rings that determined these class identifications. The women of Rome also wore jewelry but theirs was more extravagant in design. Gold was the main material used in making women's jewelry with gold coins being used to decorate their bracelets and necklaces. Again the more coin displayed on the woman's jewelry the higher that persons standing in the community.
